4-Homefield Advantage

Another week of camp is clawing it's way to friday...this week has been the most uneventful in my 7 years as a camp professional. Hats off to the agents and volunteers for bringing a GREAT group pf campers. Reba Holley's rendition of Ughm Bughm claimed 8 new initiates from camp staff to 4-H Agents. Campers enjoy seeing staff members get pranked, too - so it is a great combination.

The Adventure Group enjoyed their campout, and featured only one canoe spill - tip your hats to Surge and Cecelia, as well as Joe for leading a great trip. The Adventure Group also tested their mettle on the Giant Swing, an oversized and mind torturing challenge course element. Other activities we ran this week include: Riflery, Shotgun, Archery (Led by Nationally Certified Instructor Jonathan Casper), High Ropes, Kayaking and Canoeing (Evan and Kali), Pool (Richard and Maria), Challenge Course and Rock Climbing (Jonathon Hare), Arts and Crafts (Frankie), Sports (Damien), Ecology (Stephanie). Jordan Askew was our Staff Member of the Week - He did a great job this week with the Earth Group Boys.

As for next week - 4-H Week 2, then Operation Purple Camp! Our gears are lubed and fully engaged...This year's staff is the most complete staff ever assembled!

In my personal news, my grandmother is still hospitalized. My family is close by her side. It's my prayer that she is comforted in this time and that she can be peaceful. There is no person more remarkable than she is...she is a fighter, she is great, and she is celebrated. Grandmother - I am not sure if I will get to see you before your time...but when you get to heaven, please don't be shocked if you see Bear Bryant...and if you do, please be nice. Your children and grandchildren love you...War Eagle

Enjoy the day...

First week of 4-H Camp

We "survived" Operation Purple Camp last week...not sure why that person used the word "survived", though. Some people are intimidated by camp, some relish it...I do the latter.

This week we have 4-H groups here! Some of the counties are: Gates, Perquimans, Harnett, Bertie, Tyrrell, Hyde, and Hertford...this is the "Hometown" crowd, as we like to call it. We have to "shw out", which is not a problem...we like to brag about what we can do, and we do all well. This week will be a challenge, though. Northeast District 4-H Activity Day is Wednesday, so a lot of the campers will have to check out for a day to go and compete in their respective activities...some are doing demonstrations, others giving speeches, all grades of stuff really. It's good that the 4-H Agents have really active programs...4-H is probably what made me sorta versatile...I can cook and chop wood, is that versatile?

Next week is another 4-H week...there are some nearby counties, like Pasquotank, Wilson, and Camden that will be joining us...it will be another full week. I LOVE that summer is finlly here...I always feel like I am only one step ahead of the game though...and it is easy to get behind...weather, field trips, etc can change the schedule in a moment's notice...lucky for me, I have a really smart and helpful staff.

Also - I read our first temperature in the triple digits yesterday, but it has been kinda dry - not real humid. Last night, we had international night - it's where all of our international counselors lead programs on their home countries....they will share songs, dances, and english translations with the campers...tonight we will have a smores campfire, which was rained out last night.

I miss two things, though...(1) Being able to do a "normal" blog & (2) my grandmother...my grandmother is 101.75 years old...she has lived a long time. She has lived a hard, but happy life. Pull through grandmother, but if you don't please know that my anguish will will be assuaged and I will revel in the solemn pride that I was your grandson. Thanks for the lives you touched, the lives you made better, and the lives made lucky by you. Your wit, beauty, and grin will forever be remembered...War eagle.

Enjoy the day, and enjoy it with others...

Father's Day

As I grow older, the "kiddie" holidays mean less and less to me - like Christmas, Halloween, and Easter. I don't enjoy the candy and I'm over the mythical holiday visitors. The holidays that mean the most to me are the one's that honor what I care for most - my parents and our veterans.

I never totally understood Father's Day as a child...why would a dad want his own day? A father was a father every day. Where they supposed to celebrate their achievements as a father? This seemed to be self absorbing and wasteful. I also deliberated on whether this mean that dad "got the day off". But my dad always had the day off, and the TV on. Snoring away in the lazyboy and not watching the golf tournament was how he always spent Sundays, even Father's Day. I never got to watch him be a daddy, because he was my daddy. Now that I am older, I realize what Father's Day is about. I realize that Father's Day is a day for me to celebrate my father.

I am not sure if there is a "Father Training Academy"...if there was, I'm pretty sure that my dad would have found it senseless. My dad is a brazen leader, bold disciplinarian, and top fan of his children. Dad never believed his children could do no wrong, but they would make the right wrong. He used words like gumption and responsibility. We used words like "but I'm tired", or "I don't want to cut the grass"...

I aspire to be half of the man, father and husband my dad has been. I aspire to be none of the politician he is, but he's a good one - despite my boss's insistence that all politicians are dirty and crooked. My dad is dirty, but only after hauling firewood all afternoon. My dad is crooked, but only after he sits for a while and can't seem to stand up straight. He's honest and admirable. and I honestly admire him.

Dad is my best friend...sure I have had best friends in high school, college, and North Carolina - but he has been my friend the longest. Always firm, but always forgiving, my dad "learnt me well." It was just up to me to pay attention in "class".

We are "huntin' buddies", tailgate companions at Auburn football games, pilot and co-pilot of cross county road trips, and father and son. He's the teacher, and I'm the pupil.

What genuinely warms my heart is knowing that dad tried his hardest to do right. His mother shaped him in her mold. I have heard my dad discuss his dad less than a handful of times. I hate that my dad didn't reap the benefits as a son, that I have reaped from being his son. I can't dishonor my dad's dad - I never met the man. I also can't honor him. But I can feel sorry for him, for failing to find the opportunity to get to know his son and my father.

My dad is a great story teller, and I have enjoyed writing my life story with him. We also like to reminisce on past chapters from time to time. Dad - If you read this take a moment to remember these times...

Eating Slim Jims and Doritos at 5:00 in the morning before going hunting...I know your imagining me running and leaping in to the oversized truck...

Remember my cowboy boots? Remember the night I slipped in the garage? I do!

Remember my first deer?

Remember when the boat broke down and coach hayes towed us back - you always told me we couldn't catfish and bass fish out of the same boat - I think you were right.

Remember my high school years? I am tring not to remember - but thanks for the guidance.

Remember the Auburn-Florida Game of 1993 - that winning field goal was great!

Remember the Auburn - Vandy Game when it rained?

Remember shearing my lamb?

Remember the flat tire I got on the Ridge Road?

Remember the SEC Championship Game...what about a "Manhattan!?"

Remember the acorn incident at the Auburn - Alabama game? Remember Carnell running for 80 yards on the first play!

Remember the talk you had with me my first semester at Auburn?

Remember the when I left for North Carolina?

Dad - I love you a bunch...I can't express it in this amateurish blog, but it's my best attempt from 700 miles away. I cherish every memory form the past, every moment of the present, and I look forward to the future... these things must happen, and happen soon!

We MUST go duck hunting this upcoming season!
We MUST take that cross-country road trip!
I MUST beat you in golf for only the second time in the history of the galaxy.

Love you dad! Hate I can't see you on Sunday, but I'll be thinking about you...

First Full Day Complete

The first 24 hours of summer camp have come and gone...a relatively smooth transition from last year's staff to the current new staff.

I am pretty busy today, so a large blog will be limited. Expect a couple of special blogs later in the week.

My 102 year old grandmother fell and broke her hip several days ago...she also had a cardia emergency which instigated the entire thing. She had surgery yesterday...surgery for any one that old is a risky proposition. Early reports say that she is doing fine...and that she misses ME...thanks for the guilt trip grandmother! I wish I could be there with her...she is an amazing woman who inspires by actions and not words. She made my dad the man he is today. She is strong and stubborn, yet wise all of the time...she will do fine with two hips, one hip, or no hips.

Enjoy the day...

Camp Has STARTED!!!!!!!!!!

Finally - The summer I have been waiting for...the one where we put all the pieces together for the greatest summer ever had by any camp in the galaxy...

Operation Purple Camp is this week - it's going well! Last night during our Opening Ceremony, we discussed the camp rules - which the campers really helped in "establishing"...we also talked about Leave No Trace and did some great songs and skits...

Nobody is homesick, either! We have a full day of activities planned, namely Zoom Albums, canoeing, Team Challenge Course, Sports & Games, a neat service project, and more! Tonight is International Night!

Stay tuned for more updates...

Enjoy the day!

Bi-Daily

It appears that I have become consistent in delivering pitiful every other day blogs...so that's my goal for the summer...plus, the blogs will revolve around what is going on here and will be a tad less personal essay-ish. Just watch for major holiday blogs...they will be dedicated.

We are approximately 4 days from the start of my third summer camp at the Eastern 4-H Center...it's starting to feel like Christmas Eve! I am chomping at the bit, as well as my summer staff... We are ready to soak children in fun and energy.

Staff training news: Lee "beasted" all of the lifeguards in the pool yesterday...I think they originally doubted his superhuman abilities...if I had to be saved from an aquatic emergency, I hope it would be Lee saving me...he could even give me CPR, I just don't want anyone to tell me that he did it!

I led Operation Purple Curriculum training yesterday as the lifeguards were dragging the anchors...we had a pretty good time. I think my screaming and erratic body movements either frightens or overstimulates staff members. I was accused of asking a stupid question - here it is: "Where does trash go?"...This is not a stupid question - look around the highways! The right answer is the "TRASHCAN", but some people don't know and throw their trash wherever they please. And...I was just checking for understanding.

I got my Professional CPR certification renewed last night...it was fun. We have some really bright summer staffers...we have to EMT's and First Responders...Lee is a former paramedic and volunteer firefighter, too. And I may know a thing or two about emergency situations...we are prepared for lots of different emergencies, should the dreaded occur.

Callie, my GF, will visit me this last weekend before she begins her annual summer pilgrimmage to the Mississippi River Delta. She will comeback with a thick accent. The Mississippi Delta is almost as flat as eastern North Carolina, so she'll miss the piedmont because she can get the same level of exercise.

This last relaxed weekend, we can be found on the "Yellow Dog", my prized possession. The Yellow Dog is my Carolina Skiff that is primarily my duck boat, but also doubles as my river cruiser. It's big enough for me, my tiny girlfriend and our tiny pooch, Olivia. All together the three of us may weigh 200 pounds.

Two more days of staff training, and ready or not, here it comes...wish us luck! I have repeated to thte staff that my mission, everyday, is to set the bar for other camps, be the very best there is, and take over the world on our free time.

Enjoy the day...

Relay for Life success

Sorry about yesterday...it was really busy. Relay for Life was held here at the Center over the weekend...I heard the Grand Total raised by the Tyrrell County Relay for Life was about 31,000 dollars...that's $10 per person! The Eastern 4-H Center also won the award for best "Team Theme!"

The rain poured in late on Friday night pushing the events indoors...Charles Midgette walked for an alleged 089712 miles. The Summer Staff showed up to walk (maybe an excuse to break curfew), and really brought some life to the party. This year's summer staff is a lot of fun.

Yesterday's staff training regiment consisted on Impressions with a special presentation of "Good Counselor, Bad Counselor", Dr. David Collier and Team from Brody School of Med, and a little high ropings. Everyone that could attempt the course, did so. Only 2 staff members opted out of the zipline. Unbelievably, I have never been down the zipline. It's not the quickest way down for me when I am facilitating, though. Today is CPR and First Aid day...everyone has to be certified...

The rest of the week we will test our lifeguards and tie up loose ends...camp starts in 5 days!!!!!!!

Enjoy the day...

Weekend Upcoming

This weekend is kind of a big deal around here. We are hosting the Relay for Life "walk"! There will be lots of people, and hopefully, not lots of rain.

I haven't signed up to walk for my team, and personally, probably only devoted about 10 hours of my time to the event. I will probably make it up today and tonight, though.

We may or may not have to use treadmills to get out of the rain. I am OK with walking in the rain. If the "walk" is meant for folks to experience a day of struggle, the rain will only make it tougher. Cancer doesn't care if it rains. I don't either. I know there are some folks that can't walk in the rain and I know there are some folks that don't want to walk in the rain. I just want to do my part, rain or shine. While the event is a celebration, and rain can dampen the enthusiasm, cancer never does anything to perpetuate fun and enthusiasm, except through this event. Personally, though, I like a little struggle with my fun. The reward is bigger. How do you think a cancer survivor feels?

Come check it out, rain or shine. Get up for cancer, and don't let the weather get you back down.

Enjoy the day...

Radio found

I found my radio! It was right where I left it apparently. Last night, the Summer Staff went on the annual Scuppernong River Canoe Trip and Camp out...the trip was very pleasant. The attitude of this staff is the most pleasant of any I have ever worked with in my life.

This staff has a good attitude and gumption. There are always improvements that can be made, and I will make them with each staffer individually.

On the canoe trip:

Bugs were not bad at all
Chris , Health Coordinator, caught a five pound bass.
Everybody caught a bass but me.
We ate Campfire Pizza and no-bake cheesecake made in the outdoors.
Lee ate a granola bar, with raisins, albeit.
We took a night hike, which was fun.
6 people sustained ant bites.
Nobody got lost or told anybody to get lost.
The campfire was made of hickory, and smelled like a tasty barbecue.
Nobody flipped a canoe - first time EVER.
AJ was not selected for jury duty.
They will be done at lunch today - I have to go and pick them up.
Today, everybody will rest, but once they are rested, we will clean boats and get supplies.
Relay for Life is this weekend. The Center is hosting the event...please - no rain.
Everybody gets the whole weekend off.
Tomorrow's training schedule: "Surviving the Daily Grind", "Diversity", and "Operation Purple."
War Eagle!

Enjoy the day...

I have lost two radios...

Summer is not officially underway until I have lost my 2-way radio...but this one is the big time...

Generally i misplace my radio about 20 times per summer. Last year was ok, because Lee bought me a chest harness for it...I have lost the radio. I also cannot find the vhf radio.

Today is the big Adventure Trip down the Scuppernong River. I assign people to boats to make the trip more pleasurable for me. We will camp out in Creswell along the banks with the bears.

Enjoy the day...

Weekends...

OUr first week of staff training wrapped up Saturday with a fun event...

This year's summer staff are progressing well. I expect our MOST FUN summer, yet. Also - all of the staff look virtually the same, which is kinda weird. OUr new program staff had to do preliminary instructions - waterfront, pool, ecology, and sports and games all have new instructors. Saturday morning , Damien introduced Blob/Blog tag - I turned out to be a beast at this. We also played Giants, Wizards, and Dwarves...I proved to be to talented, both physically and mentally for my staff. I outwitted on all accounts, and brought my team back from the brink.

Once the staff was off for the weekend they participated in an off-time scavenger hunt...the scavenger hunt required the teams to peruse greater Tyrrell and Dare Counties for different items...the items were:

digital picture of Frying Pan Road sign
digital picture of a red wolf
digital picture of a bear
documentation with the words "NO OLF"
brochure of Rivertown Christmas
Cup from a local business
matchbook from a local business
map of coastal waterways
digital picture of a certain town citizen

Competition was tight ... I can announce the winner tomorrow. Also, Greenwood Forest Baptist Church visited us for programs this weekend. The group was a whole lotta fun. There was also a wedding reception...the kitchen staff here catered mini chicken cordon-bleu, crab balls, and some other items that are VERY good.

I also got a sunburn on my boat yesterday. In Staff Gluttony news, Chris Sova reportedly at the equivalent of 3 whole chickens at various barbecues over the weekend. Also, all of the summer staff went to the beach to hang out...most bought some fun hats, and some got free sunburns...

Enjoy the day...
